WHAT I LEARNED FROM HILL DAY IN DENVER, MARCH 6

PLEASE SEND COMMENTS ABOUT WHAT YOU LEARNED TO  diana@thinairweb.com FOR POSTING ON THIS SITE!!!!!
WE ALL LEARNED DIFFERENT THINGS, AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN LEARN FROM EACH OTHER

FROM DIANA:
·      I learned a lot about the process of the Legislature.
The back and forth on the floor over the Alzeimer task force was interesting, but according to my Representative, all of that discussion should have taken place in the committee, not on the floor of the House.
Districts which are covered by our MHC have no Legislators or Senators sitting on committees which regularly review mental health legislation. It was interesting to learn that my Representative and Senator both look to fellow party members who sit on these committees for direction and information.
·      After meeting with both my Representative and my Senator’s aide, my communications with both in the future will be more efficient:
I found that my Representative preferred to be contacted by cell phone or written communication as she often doesn’t get through all of her emails. However my Senator on the other hand has her aide go through ALL of her emails; the aide tallies pros and cons on legislation, and if there are pertinent comments the aide prints out the email and highlights important points, then passes it on to my Senator.
Both offices asked that any comments show in the subject line of the email or letter “communication from constituent.”
·      My Senator’s office has an intern who checks websites for pros and cons on upcoming legislation.  They were pleased to add the CBHC Legislative Slate website to their list, will check it every Tuesday, and note CBHC’s stand in their report to the Senator.

HOW CAN BOARD MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN CBHC ACTIVIES
Ask your Board to appoint you as their official representative on the CBHC Membership Committee.
This is the Committee which overseas all of CBHC’s activities. Currently, many Boards are not exercising their voice on this Committee.  Let’s become more active!  This is THE governance mechanism of CBHC, and we Board members are important!! Conference call participation is available.

Check the CBHC website regularly: cbhc.org
And in particular, this Board page.  Use it to interact with other Board members around the state, and communicate with Nita and Diana about what you would like to see on this page.

Participate in the Legislative and Community Action Committee
Any Board Member can participate in this committee. The monthly meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 1:30 at MHCD.  Participation through conference calling is available - Please contact Tena Prange for details.  This Committee discusses current Legislation that might impact mental health, and determines the CBHC stand on each bill. Conference call participation is available.

SAVE THE DATE - National Hill Day in Washington, DC, will be June 18, 2008.

Write your Legislators
Check the CBHC bill tracking slate (see URL, above).  This site is usually updated on Fridays.  Let’s all email our Legislators requesting support for any bills listed in the "Actively Support" column which are slated to be heard either by the full House, full Senate or by a Committee on which your Legislator sits. And ask them to oppose any bills listed in the "Actively Oppose" section.

HIGHLIGHTS from the LEGISLATIVE AND COMMUNITY ACTION COMMITTEE MEETING (LCAC), February 21, 2008

There is a new tool for us a 2008 Legislative Handout. This is a one page explanation of who CBHC is and what our priorities are for 2008. And it will be updated as legislation makes it way through the process. If you need a copy of this document, contact Tena Prange at tprange@cbhc.org.
